Kesha was set to perform Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe", but was prevented from doing so by Dr. Luke, as it was believed she would use the platform to speak about the lawsuit. Kesha expressed in an Instagram post about her frustration and added that she was not going to mention the lawsuit or Dr. Luke. She was ultimately allowed to perform at the BBMA's as long as she didn't speak about the lawsuit or Dr. Luke. Kesha performed the tribute and received a standing ovation for it.

Before the performance, a short videoclip appeared with Kesha announcing their performance with Macklemore appearing later wearing a glittery suit similar to Kesha's. She disapproves of his outfit and demands he go change, to which he refuses.
