"Eat the Acid" is a song by Kesha. The song was confirmed by the singer in a livestream on March 8, 2023, where she played a snippet. It serves as the co-lead single with "Fine Line", for her fifth album, Gag Order. Both songs were released on April 28, 2023, along with an accompanying visualizer directed by Vincent Haycock for "Eat the Acid".
Background[]
A six-second snippet of the track was leaked on November 2, 2022 with the title "Eat the Acid", initially believed to be fake, however the title matches one of four title tracks that Kesha herself revealed on her livestream on Instagram.[1]
On March 30, Kesha shared the official studio snippet featuring covers of "Eat The Acid" and "Fine Line" via a new SoundCloud account for a limited 24-hour period.[2][3]
The track was written the day after Kesha had a spiritual awakening mid COVID-19 isolation in 2020. The song was the first she wrote for her upcoming fifth studio album. The song is heavily influenced by Kesha's gurus, the filmmaker David Lynch and the music producer Rick Rubin, who signed the executive production of the album. The title takes inspiration from advice Pebe Sebert, Kesha’s mother, gave her from a young age so not to take LSD.
Sebert revealed on her social media that she, Kesha, and Stuart Crichton wrote the song over Zoom and some of the vocals are from iPhone recordings.
Composition[]
The song appears to take a step back from her normal party anthem vibe for the song "Eat the Acid," which features an acoustic guitar and soft, harmonizing vocals. It is a dark-wave minimalist composition and speaks of a warning Pebe Sebert gave Kesha to never take acid. "Last night I saw it all/Last night I talked to God," she sings before repeating the line, "If you don't wanna be changed like you changed me."[4] The track makes use of auto-tuned vocals, and uses bass guitars, drum machines, synthesizers and a piano.
