"Fine Line" is a song by Kesha. The song was confirmed by the singer in a livestream on March 8, 2023. It serves as the co-lead single of her fifth studio album, Gag Order, alongside "Eat the Acid". Both songs were released on April 28, 2023. An official lyric video for the song was released the same day. Kesha announced the visualizer for the song on May 2, 2023 to be released the next day.

Lyrically, the song expresses Kesha's struggle to keep her composure as the lawsuit affects her personal life and mental health.

Background[]

Several lyrics were teased in Kesha's social media bios from January to April 2023. In a live stream, she revealed the song's title and stated this took over two years to write. On March 30, 2023, Kesha shared the official studio snippet featuring covers of "Eat the Acid" and "Fine Line" via a new SoundCloud account for a limited 24-hour period.[1][2]

A tweet by Pebe Sebert on May 3, 2023 confirmed that she, Kesha, and Stint began writing the song in April 2021, two years before its release.[3]

Composition[]

The song alludes to Kesha's on-going legal battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke. The singer uses wordplay and vents solely on her emotions about the lawsuit, but does not directly refer to it. She references the title of her album with lyrics: "All the doctors and lawyers cut the tongue outta my mouth,". The song also seems that Kesha is speaking against the "dark" side of the music industry and issues a warning: "This is where you f*ckers pushed me / Don’t be surprised if sh*t gets ugly." In the early stages of the song, it originally was going to have a country composition and sung in major key.[4]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
There's a fine line I've been walking
Trying to balance is exhausting
This is where you fuckers pushed me
Don't be surprised if shit gets ugly

[Pre-Chorus]
All the doctors and lawyers cut the tongue out of my mouth
I've been hidin' my anger, but bitch look at me now
I'm at the top of the mountain, with a gun to my head
Am I bigger than Jesus, or better off dead?

[Chorus]
There's a fine line between genius and crazy
There's a fine line between broken and brеaking
Spent my whole life tryna to changе what they're saying about me
Sick of walking that fine line
Fine line between selling out and being bought
Fine line between famous and being forgot
It's time I'm coming down off of the cross
I’m sick of walking that fine line

[Verse 2]
I feel safest in the silence
And I'm so goddamn sick of fighting
The truth keeps roaring like a lion
That'll be the cross I'll die on

[Pre-Chorus]
The years keep on dragging, I'm at the end of my rope
The noose gets tighter and tighter, I'm tasting blood in my throat
Don't fucking call me a fighter don't fucking call me a joke
You have no fucking idea and trust me you'll never know

[Chorus]
There's a fine line between hope and delusion
Between what's right and what we've just gotten used to
My whole life I've had something to prove to you
Sick of walking that fine line
Fine line between surviving and living
And God some things never should be forgiven
Guess what I'm sick of pretending for you
(Ah)

[Bridge]
Fine line, fine line, fine line
Fine line, fine line, fine line
This life was never mine
This life was never mine
This life was never mine
I can't keep wasting time
I can't keep wasting time
I can't keep wasting time

[Chorus]
There's a fine line between what matters and doesn't
Between letting go and giving up
Between happy and stupid as fuck
There's a fine line between what's entertaining
And what's just exploiting the pain
But hey look at all the money we made off me
