Background[]
In November 2011, Sony Music Entertainment partnered with music producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald to create Kemosabe Records. The company releases records with Sony Music Entertainment. Gottwald was given the rights to hire his own staff, sign artists and develop talent, but he was only able to produce records for Sony artists until 2016. In April 2017, Sony distanced itself from the producer after singer Kesha accused him of rape. As of April 26, 2017, the Kemosabe website is no longer accessible. On the RCA and Sony Music's Website, Kemosabe has also been removed from the "Labels" list, and the "Facts and Figures" page on Sony's website.
History with Kesha[]
In 2005, at age 18, Kesha was signed to the label and the music publishing company, Prescription Songs. Kesha's former management company, DAS, attracted the attention of songwriter, Kara DioGuardi, who wanted to sign Kesha to Warner Bros. Records. The deal fell through due to her existing contract with Kemosabe. In September that year, she allegedly terminated her contract with DAS.
On December 18, 2023, seven months after the release of her last contractual album, Variety reported that Kesha officially parted ways with Kemosabe, RCA, and her management company Vector Management.
