"My Own Dance" is a song by Kesha from her fourth studio album, High Road, released on January 31, 2020. It was co-written by Kesha and Imagine Dragon's frontman, Dan Reynolds, along with Justin Tranter and John Hill. The song was released on November 21, 2019 as the album's first promotional single and it was serviced as the second single in Australia. It serves as the second track from the album.

Background[]

In her Atlantic interview, the song is described as "a floor-shaking reckoning with the public pressure to shut up and sing." The song was co-written with Imagine Dragons' frontman, Dan Reynolds. Kesha mentioned that her brother, Lagan, convinced her to start writing pop songs again. She admits she begrudgingly went into the studio with Reynolds, Justin Tranter, and John Hill and they wrote this song. It was this song that got her into loving pop music again.

That was the first pop song I wrote for High Road, and it was me talking to myself in my head about what my expectations for this record were, what I thought the public's expectations for this record were, what my apprehensiveness making a pop song was. Why deprive myself of something that I love doing so much? If that makes me a cheesy b**ch, then by all means sign me up, and I don't care because I'm just following what makes me happy. I'm not going to pretend to be cool if that means I don't get to write pop music.

The music video was directed by Allie Avital and shot at Oasis of Eden (the same place her Animal photoshoot took place) on August 21, 2019.[1] The visual finds Kesha in a rundown motel searching for a box of “magic cereal” and encountering a colorful cast of misfits, like bodybuilders in ski masks, lingerie-clad women in gas masks and a pair of twins straight out of The Shining. The journey eventually leads the singer to the supermarket were she finds the lone box of “magic cereal”, meets her clerk doppelgänger and then throws a party in a kiddie pool filled with the cereal and milk.

The music video features two dancers from Dancing with the Stars: Juniors as well as her bodyguard, Jeremiah.

Kesha stated on a Reddit AMA on the music video: "That video was a recreation of my last birthday when I was having a party and rented out the motel and ended up getting cereal everywhere because me and my friends were listening to music and throwing cereal at each other"

Lyrics[]

Woke up this morning, feeling myself
Hungover as hell like 2012, fuck it
"We get it that you've been through a lot of shit
But life's a bitch, so come on, shake your tits and fuck it"
What's a girl to do? What's a girl to do?

"You're the party girl, you're the tragedy"
But the funny thing's I'm fucking everything

Hey, I don't do that dance
Hey, I don't do that
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
Hey, I don't do that dance
Don't circumcise my circumstance
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance

"Well, the internet called and it wants you back
But could you kinda rap and not be so sad?" Fuck it
What's a girl to do? What's a girl to do?
Everybody, get out your nasty moves
So let's talk some shit and pour some booze, fuck it
What's a girl to do? Is this what you want? Fuck you

"You're the party girl, you're the tragedy"
But the funny thing's I'm fucking everything

Hey, I don't do that dance
Hey, I don't do that
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
Hey, I don't do that dance
Don't circumcise my circumstance
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance

I don't owe 'em nothing, maybe I owe everything
Grateful for the lovers and even the haters
I feel like I'm nothing; somedays, I am everything
Caught up in my feelings; bitch, shut up and sing
Ooh

Hey, I don't do that dance
Hey, I don't do that (No)
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
Hey, I don't do that dance
Don't circumcise my circumstance
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
Hey, I don't do that dance
Hey, I don't do that (Do that, do that)
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
Hey, I don't do that dance
Don't circumcise my circumstance
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance
