"Nightmare" is an unreleased song by Miley Cyrus. It was written by Cyrus, Dr. Luke, Kesha and Cirkut, and was produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut. The song was intended for her fourth studio album, Bangerz, but it did not make the cut.
Background[]
The track was leaked on June 9, 2015 and reached the top of the Billboard Trending 140 chart.[1]
In 2014, Dr. Luke stated that the song was like the "little sister" to Cyrus' hit "Wrecking Ball", but a little more moved.
In 2014, Nicki Minaj dropped her song "The Night Is Still Young," which seems to recycle some elements from the instrumental of "Nightmare," as both songs were produced by Dr. Luke.
Critical reception[]
Sophia Elias of HELLO GIGGLES said: ""Nightmare" is an ideal combination of electronic, pop, and rock, which is a slight departure from her hip-hop influenced Bangerz album (2013). Produced by Dr. Luke (i.e. the producer for Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and Nicki Minaj's "The Night Is Still Young"), the song seamlessly combines a synth-heavy chorus with breaks of acoustic guitar strums throughout."[2]
Lyrics[]
Hey! Feels like I'm asleep, but I'm awake
In this dream I never see your face
I'm just a step behind
Hey! Can't remember why you went away
Pinch me cause I know it's a mistake
I wanna see your eyes
I woke up in another life
When nothing's really dangerous
And everything is black and white
And no one even knows
I woke up in a broken dream
With no one lying next to me
It's not how it's supposed to be
So why'd you have to go?
I'm still trying, to wake up from this
From this nightmare, from this nightmare
Where everything is, in its right place
But you're not there, no you're not there
Hey! Table's set for two, but it's a waste
I'm the only one that's breaking plates
The quiet's getting loud
Hey! Everyone keeps saying I'm okay
One more night alone I'll go insane
I need to hold you now
I woke up in another life
When nothing's really dangerous
And everything is black and white
And no one even knows
I woke up in a broken dream
With no one lying next to me
It's not how it's supposed to be
So why'd you have to go?
I'm still trying, to wake up from this
From this nightmare, from this nightmare
Where everything is, in its right place
But you're not there, no you're not there
Suddenly I can almost see you
Feel the heat of your breath on my skin
Scared to death but I'm only dreaming
Suddenly I can see you fading
Going on, but my heart starts racing
Scared to death cause I know I'm dreaming
I'm still trying, to wake up from this
From this nightmare, from this nightmare
Where everything is, in its right place
But you're not there, no you're not there
